Old Queenslander home in Soudan Street, Toowong, taken in 1951

31 SOUDAN STREET, TOOWONG.

John Charles & Evelyn Margaret Ballantyne (Jack & Evie) moved to 31 Soudan Street, Toowong after they were married on 19 November 1938. They had two children, Valmai Margaret born 15 April 1940 and Roslaind Ann born 15 April 1945. They received their Primary education at St Ignatius Convent.

Evie died on 1 July 1958, Valmai and Roslaind married in 1959 and 1966 respectively.

Jack continued to live in the house until the end of 1993 when age and ill health made it necessary for a move to Canossa Complex at Oxley.

Jack died on 4 July 1994. At the time of his death he had five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Note from the web:

"Old Jack", as my son called him, was the gentleman of Soudan Street, and will always be sadly missed by his neighbours.

He would be seen daily leaving his home with his hat perched on his head, and his leather carry-all in hand, walking up to the bus stop to go into the "village" to do his messages and meet his mates for a beer.

He loved to "have a chat" over the back fence, and often referred to his wife who had passed away - "my dear wife used to say".
