"This is the original Toowong Station taken from Benson Street in about 1900(?). Notice Patterson's Sawmill had not then shifted to the site. The station looked much like this until the late 1950's when it was demolished to allow construction of two more sets of tracks and extending the platforms for electric rail sets. The road bridge, High Street and Benson Street were also raised and rebuilt to allow for the train pantographs. It took another 20 years for the electric trains to start running. The station, rail sidings and Patterson's Sawmill became the site of Toowong Village Shopping Centre opened in November 1986. The Centre is built on a combination of freehold, railway
leasehold nd railway airspace rights and required it's own Act of Parliament
to deal with the Land Title issues. The sounds of cutting blades and smell
of sawdust from Patterson's was part of the character of Toowong for almost
80 years" Photos
